Therapy

Shiro-Dhara

A continuous, unbroken stream of warm oil poured across the forehead, the single most effective Ayurvedic treatment for a nervous system that will not settle.

What it is

Warm medicated oil, buttermilk or decoction flows from a suspended vessel in a steady stream onto the forehead, moving slowly from side to side. The rhythm and temperature are held constant for the whole session.

What it helps

Insomnia, anxiety, chronic stress, migraine and tension headache, hypertension, and the mental restlessness that accompanies long illness. Many patients fall asleep during the session itself.

What to expect

You lie still on your back for the duration. The effect is cumulative, so Shiro-Dhara is usually given as a course over consecutive days rather than as a single treatment.
