Panchakarma

Virechana

Controlled medicated purgation that clears Pitta from the liver, gallbladder and small intestine, the most widely applicable of the five.

What it is

Following internal oleation and fomentation, a medicated purgative is given and the number and quality of motions is monitored to judge whether the cleansing has been adequate.

What it helps

Chronic skin disease including psoriasis and eczema, hyperacidity and reflux, liver disorders, migraine, chronic constipation, hormonal imbalance, and inflammatory joint disease.

What to expect

Preparation at home with increasing doses of medicated ghee, then the procedure day at or near the clinic, then the graded diet. Most patients describe the following week as unusually clear-headed.

Who should not have it

Avoided in pregnancy, acute illness, severe debility and certain bowel conditions. Your current medication is reviewed before the course is planned.
