Panchakarma

Basti Chikitsa

Medicated decoction and oil administered rectally, classically regarded as half of all Ayurvedic treatment, and the principal therapy for Vata.

What it is

Basti is a family of treatments rather than one procedure. Niruha uses herbal decoction to cleanse; Anuvasana uses oil to nourish; they are alternated in a schedule set for your condition. Dr. Megha determines the type, sequence and number.

What it helps

Arthritis and rheumatoid conditions, sciatica, lumbar disc disease, paralysis and neurological disorders, chronic constipation, infertility, and almost all chronic Vata disease. It is the single most versatile procedure in Panchakarma.

What to expect

Administered in the morning, with retention times that vary by type. Most patients continue normal activity between sittings. Courses run from eight to thirty days depending on the schedule chosen.

Who should not have it

Contraindicated in acute diarrhoea, rectal bleeding of unknown cause, and certain bowel conditions. An examination precedes the first sitting.
