Panchakarma

Raktamokshana

Controlled removal of a small quantity of blood, most often by medicinal leech, precise, local, and frequently the fastest route to relief.

What it is

Impure blood is removed from a localised area, usually using sterile medicinal leeches (Jalaukavacharana) whose saliva also carries anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory compounds. Needle venesection is used where leeches are unsuitable.

What it helps

Varicose veins, non-healing ulcers, localised psoriasis and eczema, gout, acne and pigmentation, and chronic localised inflammation that has not responded to internal medication.

What to expect

A single sitting takes thirty to sixty minutes. Leeches are single-use and discarded. The site is dressed afterwards and kept clean and dry for a day.

Who should not have it

Not given in anaemia, bleeding disorders, on anticoagulant medication, or in pregnancy.
