Panchakarma

Vamana

Supervised therapeutic vomiting that clears accumulated Kapha from the chest and stomach, the first of the five procedures.

What it is

After several days of internal oleation and fomentation, a medicated emetic is given and the expulsion of Kapha is carefully supervised from start to finish. The preparation matters more than the procedure itself.

What it helps

Bronchial asthma, chronic allergic rhinitis, recurrent cold and sinusitis, chronic skin disease, obesity, hyperacidity, PCOS and hypothyroidism with Kapha dominance.

What to expect

Three to seven days of preparation, one procedure day under direct supervision, then a graded diet (Samsarjana Krama) over the following week. Plan to be off work on the procedure day and to eat very simply afterwards.

Who should not have it

It is not given in pregnancy, in the very young or very frail, or in significant cardiac or respiratory compromise. Suitability is decided at consultation, not on request.
